A birthday can be a great day to do two things: reflect and celebrate.
Reflect.
On your birthday, try to give yourself an hour earlier in the day to just be quiet and reflect on how you’ve lived your life over the past year. Think about such things as relationships, health, wealth, career, etc. Have you made progress in these and other areas or have you remained stagnant or even gone backwards in one of them? Be honest with yourself.
Make a written list of what you have failed to do or need improving on. This can be a great source for setting some new goals or refining current goals.
Don’t just dwell on the negative.
Make a list of what you have achieved or at least improved on in the past year. Write down any improvements you’ve made no matter how small it is. Note any business, financial or career successes. Take some joy from those.
Don’t forget your personal life. Have you been getting on better with your spouse? How is your relationship with your children? Made any new friends this year? How’s your health, better or worse? Did you manage to have an enjoyable trip anywhere? See whether you can improve on these areas over the next year.
It’s always good to be grateful that you’ve had another year on life in this world. Life can be such a precious gift. Remember there are plenty of people in the world who are much worse off than you and lack the opportunities that you have. Perhaps you can think of ways how to make someone else’s life better over the next year..
Celebrate.
Spend time with family and friends. Go out for dinner or a picnic; have a party, get a little drunk and hug and kiss someone or several people you really like with the excuse that you’re drunk. Real friends won’t care and you’ll soon discover who’s anal retentive.
Just have fun and do something you really want to do. Be happy and share that happiness with those around you. Be human. Your birthday celebration shouldn’t be a solemn occasion, but a joyous occasion. Don’t think, that it’s one less year I have left on this Earth. Rather think that it has been one more year you’ve been blessed with to enjoy here.

Happy Birthday, Gordie! Good occasion to reflect on the past and plan for the future, and a perfect time for a blog post.
I like your suggestion of going out for a little celebration and hugging and kissing people you really like
Enjoyed the post! Have a lovely day today!
Thanks, Amrita. That’s very sweet of you!
Happy Birthday, Gordie!
May you have many, many more to reflect upon life’s journey.
Nice post. All the best to you man.
Cheers Jimi!
Happy Birthday dude!
Have a drink on me
Will do!
Hey
Happy Birthday Gordie…Enjoy your day and be sure to have a blast.
Have another pint on me
Will do, too!
Happy birthday Gordie!
Cheers, Mike!
A year older is a year wiser… thanks for these tips on reflection… also… happy birthday!
Hope the reflection is of some use. Thanks for the birthday wishes, Tristan.
Happy Birthday Gordie! I like the reflective nature of the post. Cool pic too
Cheers mate and all the best for your Iron man race on Sunday!
Hey Gordie!!!
Happy Birthday fella! Such a great birthday post mate, something that I have found myself doing to be honest, especially on my 40th this year having just come out of brain surgery 7 weeks previous. I can totally understand every word and sentiment – there have beena few people since that I would have loved to have hugged and kissed – as long as the wife didn’t find out that is

Reflection is brilliant – as long as you have the drive and energy to act upon it. I hate having some of the same targets each year! Procrastination is our worst enemy – one day I will do something about that
You got me thinking, and thank you for that. May your future years be blessed with many more Birthdays and belts of motivation!
Look forward to reading some more. I have granted your wish, I have subscribed to your RSS feed and will be signing up for the other stuff after I have pressed the “send button” – a pillar post if ever I saw one!

Wow, Chris. You comment made me cry.
I sincerely hope your recovery from the surgery is coming along okay. Stay strong brother and no more procrastinating.
Happy Birthday Mate;
What you got on your gift card?
To Gordie …
From Gordie …
Great way to sit and reflect what has happened, and where you will be in the next year
Actually I didn’t write “From Gordie”on the card. That way I could pretend someone actually liked me.
I really like the idea of thinking over things on your birthday. Usually I don’t do it on my birthday though, it’s usually on the 4th of July. When I watch the fireworks here in the U.S., I have a few minutes to think… where was I last year? What have I accomplished since then? Great post idea, Gordie.
Thanks Nate. I think there is something to looking up into the heavens at night whether it be filled with fireworks or stars and contemplating important issues.
Wishing you a scent-sational birthday and may you have good health and continued success to celebrate with next year!
Patty
Thank you, Patty!
Bon anniversaire, cumpleanos feliz and happy birthday from the land down under.
Excellent steps here for taking stock, planning an even better year next year and congratulating yourself on your successes of the previous year. I think people do this on New Years but not their birthday so it’s a great idea to do it on the day your were born too. Twice as many check ins.
Glad you included getting drunk too:) I had a great party on my 40th – the first big party I’d had since my 21st with everyone pushing each other in the pool fully clothed and generally behaving in a debauched and childish manner. Happy memories! You’ll be accumulating some more too:)
Hi Annabel,
It sounds like you had a really nice 40th. It’s good for us to let loose now and again. It’s called being human.
Happy Birthday Gordie!!!!
It’s really helpful to step back and reflect, to get a clear look at what you’ve done and what your doing, I try to do this whenever I can.
You and your blog have already enriched my life Gordie. Hope you had a wonderful birthday
Cheers Blaine,
Actually I also learn a lot from your blogging tips. Our respective blogs are very complimentary. You show us how to blog, and I try to show you how to live when you’re not blogging.
Happy Birthday Gordie,
Great posts! Keep them coming.
Thanks John, enjoying your blog too.
