How To Put Your WordPress Blog On Autopilot And Spend Most Of Your Time At The Beach.

by Srinivas

beach

When most people look at my lifestyle design, they wonder when the hell am I applying for jobs and writing blog posts. After all, if you’ve read my blog up until now, you know the majority of my time is spent at the beach, surfing.

Believe it or not, publishing blog posts every single day and spending most of your time hanging out at the beach is not as complicated as it sounds.

It all comes down to two simple words-”Time Management”. If there’s anything business school taught me, it was how to effectively manage my time. I’ve always been pretty good at it, but business school made me better. The truth is I don’t spend that much time writing each single week. I might spend about 2 hours writing, and 2 hours promoting blog posts.

Truth be told, I HATE spending time in front of the computer. My best friend put it well when he said “you know, with evolution, we spent 2000 years learning to stand upright, and now we sit in front of a computer all day.” Many conditions such as repetitive strain injury didn’t even exist about 25 years ago.

4 Simple Steps I Use To Put My WordPress Blog On Autopilot.

1. Write multiple posts at the same time.

In one of my posts on coming up with ideas for blog posts, I mentioned that you should keep a notepad document and jot down ideas for a blog post every time you think of one. In my queue of potential topics I may have 5-6 ideas for posts at any one time. Sometimes I can’t figure out what the post will be about, but I know it will come to me, so I let it brew for a few days. With regards to writing, when you write, you tend to get into a flow state. That flow state will probably last up to 2 hours. So, leverage the hell out of it and write as many posts as you can in that time. My average time spent on writing a post is 20-30 minutes. So if I sit down for a writing session, I’ll hammer out 3-4 posts. Like most things, this is about training yourself. Once you train yourself to write multiple posts in a sitting, it will become easy.

2. Use the WordPress publishing schedule function.

This is one thing I love about WordPress. I could literally be on vacation for 5 weeks and have posts continually publishing. Since you can specify when you want the post to be published, put everything on a schedule. I usually put everything into my queue on Sunday night, specifically so I can be at the beach as much as possible.

3. Leverage Guest Posts.

This week I had 3 posts and I was thinking I might have to write another post. Thankfully, Gilbert from Soulhiker sent me a guest post. So, that took care of most of the week. If anything I may have to write one article later in this week.

4. Place a time limit on yourself.

Believe it or not, placing a time limit on yourself is a really useful way to speed up your writing skill. You may not believe it’s possible, but when you put yourself in a situation where it’s a must, you’ll find that you’ll meet the time limit. Eventually you’ll just do it without thinking about it.

Hey Srinivas, these are some great ideas for automation. Most of what you provided here was on how to leverage time and have how to do more with it with less of it. Hope you’re having fun surfing!

All practical tips Srinivas. I too experience the feeling of ‘flow’ when inspired. I can rattle off quite a bit of content when in the flow. It’s important to maximize your creativity during these periods.

5 Ideas With A Kick October 26, 2009 at 9:43 pm

This is one of the most insightful posts I read this month. Besides the good tips, it reinforces my recent decision to manage my time so I dedicate just a small amount of time to actual work (even though I enjoy most of my work ) and pursue other activities as well. Probably not that much spending time at the beach as you, but I’ve got my list of fun things to do :)

Scheduled posting is the best thing since sliced bread. I love being able to write late at night, or whenever I have a few quiet moments, and then schedule out my posts for the upcoming week!

I just wish the beach was a little closer…

I’m glad to see that you guys are finding these tips useful. I also think that anybody who has a full time job and wants to put time into their blog needs to be a good time manager.

When I saw the title I was scared that this would be about some auto-content generation, which I’m not a big fan of, but instead this proved to be a great post about the WordPress feature that doesn’t get enough press (bun intended).

The schedule-feature really is the best, just like Erica said above. I write multiple posts on one go and then schedule them or save them as drafts if I feel I might work on them a bit more and possibly publish next week or so.

I like to think of the schedule function as a publishing pipe (something I covered in a post last week, How To Properly Take Time of Blogging), when instead of publishing a post right away, your new articles always go to the “back of the queue”. If you fill your buffer enough, you can take a mini-vacation and go to the beach and surf, just like Srinivas :)

Lately I’ve come to despise sitting in front of the computer. It feels like a prison. I’m going to write a post about this in the near future. I’m also going to adopt the auto-schedule for posts.

This is certainly an area that I need to improve on, and this is a timely reminder for me to do something about it instead of just thinking about it. I already have my ‘post ideas’ list in my notebook, but haven’t got them written or scheduled.

I will have to investigate the scheduling function more to see if you can change the timing once scheduled (I am sure you will be able to). This would mean that I could have some posts ‘in the can’ just in case external forces (the day job) mean I miss a post deadline, but that I can still post topically if I have the time.

15 Srinivas Rao October 27, 2009 at 6:18 am

One of the things I wanted to mention is that sometimes I will get an idea for a post and I will just hammer it out and keep it “in the can.” So, if you are struck with sudden inspiration and find yourself doing nothing, hammer it out, and by doing this you’ll never have a shortage of blog posts.

I’ve been doing that. Sometimes sudden inspiration just comes along and I know that my juices are flowing, so I’ll spend an hour or two working on it.

I also struggle to write a quality post quickly. I’m amazed when guys say they can spurt out 2-4 posts in a couple of hours. Does that include research time? Do you research? I’m actually cutting back on the number of posts I write so I can get myself away from the damn computer.

The thought has crossed my mind to batch post and schedule them out but then that might mean you sacrifice passion and inspiration in your posts when you force yourself to write. I can see the benefits though and I’ll have to do it and see how it feels.

Time limits are excellent, I notice when I have little time it makes my brain speed up so I work faster. Just don’t procrastinate I guess.

Gordie – thank heavens it’s not just me! Generally it does take me hours to write a post – or at least to perfect the first rough draft. Funnily enough though I have noticed that some of my most popular posts are the ones I’ve banged out in a couple of hours.

Srinivas – Thanks for the tips. I have another re going on holiday and using the auto-post thing. I did that and just before I left I mentioned on my blog that I was going away but not that I’d already got the posts all written so the site would still be updated while I was off. Duh! They all stopped visiting didn’t they. Oh well, you live and learn:)

Good post! I am currently working on my time-management skills, since I’ve come to realize that this is crucial for my progress. It’s incredible how much time can go wasted if I don’t have a well-formulated plan or schedule ready.

And I’ve also been experimenting with time limits, though not very successfully yet.

Thanks for this post!
