The Lifestyle Design Anthem: “My Way”.

by Gordie

Frank_Sinatra

If there’s one song for me that sums up lifestyle design better than any other it’s “My Way”. I believe it could well serve as the lifestyle design anthem. You’re probably most familiar with Frank Sinatra’s version, so let’s take a look at the lyrics to make sure I’m on the ball and haven’t just been smoking crack cocaine again.

Live life to the max.

My Way.

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I’ll say it clear,
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain.

I’ve lived a life that’s full.
I’ve traveled each and every highway;
And more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Lifestyle design is about experiencing as much as you can in life. In other words, you’re living a life that’s full experiencing love, travel, friendship, meaningful career, challenging yourself, etc. As you go through life, you’ll experience the good and the bad that life throws at you. Most importantly you’ll live life the way you want to and not according to what society, parents, peers expect you to live. You’ll live your way.

Don’t hang onto regrets.

Regrets, I’ve had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

As a lifestyle designer, you’ll want to be able to look back on your life from any point of time and not regret the past. Like the song says, you may have some regrets but in the context of your entire life they aren’t worth mentioning. Overall, you should have lived your life is such a way that you’re happy.

If you’re only now coming to realize the benefits of lifestyle design, then start moving forward aiming for ways to bring more meaning and happiness into your life. Also, remember that one of the best ways for your life to have meaning is for you to help other people.

As a lifestyle designer, you should know what you need to do to achieve your goals. You’ll be committed and focused carrying out your plans to reach your goals.

You’ll make detailed plans and will move towards your goal, step by step. Remember to make your plan suitable for you. Everyone is different, so you’ll have to tailor plans in order to reach your goals your way. This will help you to enjoy the all important journey of life and not just looking forward to reaching your destination (goal).

Don’t be sad if you fail to achieve every goal.

Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

In life, you’ll set yourself some big goals and may fail to achieve some. That’s okay. You’ll learn so much by doing that. Remember, never feel shame in failing to achieve your goal or when circumstances don’t let you carry out your plans. Face all hardship by standing tall.

Take the good with the bad.

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried.
I’ve had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

Realize that life will be full of good times and the bad times. It’s okay to have times in life when you cry. Life gives but it also takes. Life will take from you some of the dearest things in different ways. It can take loved ones through illness and death; friends will move away; children will leave home; income streams will dry up.

It’s alright to be sad at those times, but you shouldn’t be carrying around that sadness with you for the rest of your life. Your tears should subside and as you think of the joy those people and things brought you before you lost them you should be able to smile and see the happiness you had and can have if you cherish those memories and think positively.

Life also allows you experience joys such as the birth of your child, children graduating, being independent and not reliant on someone else to provide a job for you, friendships and relationships, sunsets, etc.

Show and tell people about the great things you’ve done.

To think I did all that;
And may I say – not in a shy way,
No, oh no not me,
I did it my way.

It’s okay to recall all the great things you’ve done. Don’t be shy about telling and showing people, just remember to do it in a tasteful and humble way. Watch out for arrogance. Arrogance must be avoided. Arrogance nullifies all the good you’ve done for people because your selflessness turn to selfishness once you start boasting. Instead show people what you’ve done so that you may inspire them to achieve great things in their own lives.

Remain free by remaining true to yourself.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

Make sure you keep yourself free from superficial constraints. To do that, you need to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone else. As the song says if you’re not being yourself, then you have nothing, you’re a slave. Say what you feel, albeit respectfully. Are you going to get down on your knees and cower before life or stand tall and take everything it throws at you? Will you conform to how everyone expects you to or will you live your life your way?

Your turn.

Do you agree that “My Way” is the most suitable lifestyle design anthem? Do you have other suggestions for songs that may be a good alternative? Do you think I’ve interpreted the lyrics accurately or have I gone senile? Please let me know in the comments section below. Thank you.

Valid point. True now as it was then and definitely becomes more relevant with each passing year.

Good stuff man. I like the fact that you are coming from the perspective of Lifestyle Design. Most people only think about money. But if you think about how you want your lifestyle to be, you’ll figure out exactly how much you need. For example, until this summer I thought I wanted to be some big corporate hot shot. Now I just want to get to a life where I can travel the world surfing, and live an abundant life.

Hey Srinivas,
That sounds like a pretty cool lifestyle to me. You’re right when you say it’s not all about money.

Great interpretation and a great song Gordie! Here are some others which could become Lifestyle Design anthems:

Always look on the bright side of life
Things can only get better
(And my personal Lifestyle song) Queen – One Vision

Thanks, Mike. Yeah, those songs are pretty suitable too. And how about Queens’ “The Show Must Go On”?

Very well put Gordie. I liked it.
I wouldn’t agree to much on the “My Way” anthem. Because I think blogging has much to do with serving others as opposed to serving self.
Being true to oneself cannot be separated from being true to others.
Often time I find when I did it My way, I failed. When I took advice from those who had been through it all and had good experience, I often achieved my goal.

I suggest:
Help – The Beatles
Because of You – Kelly Clarkson
She Works Hard For The Money – Donna Summer

Lol! Okay, Robert. You can still ask for advice and serve others, but make sure you’re living life your way. ;)

Great and very relevant lyrics. I especially like how the song/you talk about failure. You need to fail to succeed in my book, just embrace the failure, learn and move forward. Cool post!

Failure, is an awesome teacher. I’ve learned most of my blogging stuff from my previous two failed blogs. Thanks, Nate.

I love Frank, especially this song. I think that’s what it boils down to because at the end of your days, you are only accountable to yourself. Don’t let others rob you of your power.

Thanks Nathan,
The one I would hate is to realize at the end of my days that I was living how others wanted me to live. That’s what prisons are for.

That final curtain bit is too close for comfort :-)

Some interesting interpretations though.

That’s such a beautiful song, life’s too short to try and be something you’re not or do something you don’t enjoy. Waking up each morning and getting to do the things you love is one of the keys to a fulfilling life. :-)

I agree with you Big Manta,
I find it easier to get up earlier now since I am doing things my way and doing what I want to do.

:-) Those lyrics say it all, Gordie
Remaining “free from superficial restraints” is huge. Too many people trying to be someone else, which is too much work to begin with, makes you wonder why they put themselves through it.
“My Way” is so appropriate, I’ll leave it at that. Good post!

Hey Jimi,
I think you’re right. It can be pretty tiring trying to live up to people’s expectations.

Great article Gordie. We share the same philosophy in life, which is just awesome. I used to be the type who thought that happiness can only be found if you’re rich, which is why I went to the trouble of getting a degree. While it is still valid in many ways, there are more in life than just chasing after material goods. Much more.

Hi Karlil,

The degree has a place and I’ll be writing a post on that in future. Yes, there is much more to life than just material goods. :)

“My Way” has always bugged me. To me it reeks of adolescent hands on the hips, stamping feet and pouting, chafing at parental restraints while not yet being self-aware or experienced enough to realise their own lack of maturity.

Having said that, excellent post, many good points.

I would, however, like to echo what Robert Bravery said. Humans are social animals, not individuals, and so while living our way we must still live up to our responsibilities to family and society. It’s a difficult balance to maintain.

Hi Chris,
I agree with you. I wasn’t preaching selfishness or being an dick and pissing everyone one off and shirking responsibility. I am the first one to admit the world has too much selfishness in it.

Thanks for stopping by Chris.

Gordie,

I like the connection. Old Blue Eyes grew up a half hour away from me here in NJ, albeit a few years ahead of me. Happy people do it their way. They make the critical decision to experience life on their own terms.

There will be ups and downs. If there weren’t you’d be dead. Literally. Change needs to be embraced, viewed for what it is, and then it’s time to move on.

Every moment of our existence we have a choice to think and do what we want to do. The beauty of free will.

While I whole heartedly believe in lifestyle design and making the life you want a reality, we forget all too often how selfish this is. Me, me, me….it’s all I am hearing from every lifestyle designer including myself until most recently. What I have found through my travels is that it’s the down times when you get perspective. It’s when you get exactly the opposite of what you desire that you gain what you really need….perspective and humbling. It’s through loss that we gain the most fulfillment. It’s completely ironic, but so true. When everything is ideal there is no challenge or growth. Even though I may find myself scrubbing bathrooms in exchange for stay at a hostel, that’s much better than worrying about getting shot daily like women in the Congo. Everything is related to perspective and how much you are willing to realize how lucky you already have it. Sure take advantage of your rights and live the life of your dreams, but don’t forget how much others suffer while you walk around on your high horse. Just my two sense…sorry if it’s not the most positive, but these are things I am realizing more and more. You have to give to life in order to reap it’s benefits, not visa versa.

I think in some ways you’re right, Amber. I think in reaction to the my job, my boss centered lifestyle, many have gone to the opposite extreme and made it all about “me”. I think there is a balance, and that life can be about me, but it should also be about others.

You’re right in someways that or lives are better off than many others, but this can also become an excuse to not aim for the best. An example, is that my own country New Zealand is seeing a large increase in violent crime. However, a lot of people will then say that we are still much less violent than other countries. To me, that’s lowering standards. If other countries suffer from violent crime, I don’t thin it’s a reason for us to become tolerant of some violent crime.

Anyway, Amber, I really appreciate the thought you have put into your comment. It made me think too. Thank you. :)

I never really gave the lyrics in this song all that much thought. I always thought of it more of a creepy song about confronting the end of your 15 minutes/retirement/death-fade to black kinda stuff. But this is great Gordie, I especially love this bit because it is so important: “Most importantly you’ll live life the way you want to and not according to what society, parents, peers expect you to live. You’ll live your way.”

Stumbled!

Hey Cody,
The funny thing is that I thought exactly the same thing for years. It’s only since Ive been into lifestyle design that my brain is seeing new insight in old things. I think it’s just a whole new way of thinking.

Thanks for the stumble!
