Meet The World’s Fattest Lifestyle Designer.

by Gordie

Fat Gordie

Got your vomit buckets ready? Below are some pretty disgusting photos. These are exclusive photos of the rare species lifestyle designus fattus. You may have thought that a fat lifestyle designer was only a mythic creature or even a contradiction in terms.

The lifestyle designus fattus doesn’t live in zoos nor in circus freak shows. This particular specimen currently dwells in the urban habitat of Tianjin, China. His name is Gordie.

Let’s Get Serious.

Hello. My name is Gordie Rogers and I’m a fat bastard.

In the past five years, I’ve ballooned from 198 Lbs (90 Kgs) up to 294 Lbs (132 Kgs). When I was about 198 pounds (90 kilograms) back in 2004, I had lost about 22 Lbs (10 Kgs) of weight previously through exercise and diet. I had a routine where I was going to the gym regularly and eating pretty healthy. But then I had two ex-girlfriends come across to travel around China with me in the summer of 2004. By traveling for a month, I broke my routine. I started eating fast food again and stopped exercising. I also started to enjoy the taste of junk food once more.

Fat Gordie 1

After that summer vacation, I made another stupid move. For my first one and half years in China, I’d pretty much just hung around with Chinese friends. However, in September 2004, I started to miss having regular contact with Westerners, so I started going down to a famous expat bar here in Tianjin. It wasn’t long until I was into regular nights out drinking lots of beer and eating pizza with them. I also hadn’t started to exercise again since I stopped to go traveling.

Fat Gordie 2

Five years later after being busy doing other things, and not looking after myself, my body is a depressing sight. Sure, I still get girls still saying I look cute like a teddy bear, but that just doesn’t cut it for me. I want to be sleek, strong, fit and healthy. Watch me walk up three flight of stairs and you’ll hear me huffing and puffing. If I got pick pocketed, I wouldn’t be able to chase after the thief because I’m too fat and slow.

Bending down to do up my shoe laces becomes a chore because of the fat in my belly presses hard up against my chest when bending down, and makes it difficult to breathe.

Enough is enough.

I’ve made a few half-assed attempts at losing fat in the past couple of years, but with no real plan. This time, I’ve made a commitment to get healthy and share my journey along the way. I hope that some of you out there may be encouraged as you see my progress on my health and fitness journey.

Fat Gordie 4

I have started a new category on Lifestyle Design 4U called Health and Fitness. This will add more variety of content to this lifestyle design blog for you.
I’ll update to on my progress from time to time, as well as offer you advice as I find what is and isn’t working for me.

Fat Gordie 5

I’m not going to go crazy, but rather slowly introduce some lifestyle changes into my life week by week. This week, I have work on breaking an addiction, which I’ll tell you about in my next post on Thursday.

Fat Gordie 6

Conclusion.

The reason I want to become healthy is because I’m unhappy the way I am. I don’t like the way I look; I don’t like the way I feel; I don’t like being limited in being able to live an active lifestyle due to being overweight. My goal is to get down to 198 Lbs (90 Kgs) by July 1st 2011. I’m not going to go on some fad diets or overdo things exercise wise. I want to take a steady approach that I can add as part of a permanent lifestyle.

I don’t need or want sympathy. I only blame myself for the poor shape that I’m in. I admit that it’s because of the poor choices I made, that I’m the way I am.
What I’d like is some advice from you on what you’ve found that works for being healthy and getting into shape. I have some ideas what I need to do, but extra advice from my faithful readers at this early stage would also be appreciated.

Thank you.

I was just about to get my second ice-cream out of the freezer when I saw this and decided to have a glass of sparkling water instead:)

It’s cruel getting old isn’t it? When I was a kid I ate chocolate, crisps and all manner of things and maintained a skeletal figure. Now I’m older I’m starting to gain weight. Writing is the enemy too.

Glad to see that you are drawing a line in the sand here. I lost 50lb once after giving birth to an 11lb baby and losing the extra weight over the course of a year. I think the main things are:

1. Lose no more than 1kg a week. Not sure if this fits with your goals, you can do the sums:)
2. Walk. Everywhere. Or I hear biking is popular in China:)

Bravo for posting these pics. My family viewed them and Max aged 8 can’t understand why you say it’s disgusting. Rejoice that you can walk and are healthy and look forward to walking faster and being healthier than ever.

Well done Gordie – that took some guts (no pun intended……well maybe a small one!)

Anyway – here’s my advice, based on how I lost 10 Kilos. Three sensible, square meals a day and never miss breakfast. Nothing in between, except as much water as you can manage. During week no alcohol. That was it!

Good simple advice there, Mike. If I did that with some exercise, I’m sure I’d start to lose weight. Cheers.

I don’t blame you for falling into bad habits during/after travelling with two ex’s, I’m sure that’s another story on it’s own too :) Also, I would’ve not recognized you from the sideshot, which was pretty interesting. Anyway.. utmost respect and all the best with the new, active lifestyle. Kudos for having the guts and go all out with public announcement like this, I’m sure it’ll help you with your goals too!

This is great. The perfect thing for me to read first thing today. (thanks Mike CJ) I too am kicking myself into action along the same lines. So tired, tired, tired of living in a body that doesn’t serve me. One thing I know for sure: it can’t be done alone. I was going to wish you good luck but let’s face it it’s not so much about luck. Your post inspired me so I’ll say: Be inspired!

Gordie,

Get a copy of Eating for Life by Bill Phillips. (he also has a very good workout program!) It has helped my husband tremendously. It’s not a diet/fad, it’s a lifestyle of healthy eating.

It takes a while, and isn’t easy, but if you can gradually make the switch to whole foods… whole grains, fresh and steamed vegetables, and less pre-packaged foods, you’ll not only lose weight, but you’ll feel better too. After about 3 weeks of cutting those things from our diets fast food didn’t even taste good anymore. What’s more, it made us feel sick.

I don’t know how much you like to cook. If you love it, GREAT! If not, learn! Take a class if you have to. Preparing your own food from fresh ingredients is the way to go!!!

Don’t starve yourself or deprive yourself.

You’re a brave guy to post your before pics!! Looking forward to keeping up with your progress and cheering you on!!

Hi Erica,
I think the key is to start to eliminate as much processed food as possible and replace it with natural foods.

I can’t cook to save myself, so once I know what kind of food and diet I’m eating, I’ll by a cook book to help me make the meals at home.

eXeRciSe is important! try to get at least 30mins of continuous exercise twice a week.. more is better of course, but we don’t always have the time in this crazy day and age.. try skipping! get a skipping rope and count while you skip.. skip everyday, and make sure that the number of skips are more than the day before..

of course, you won’t skip for the full 30 minutes! go for a brisk walk as well, or try some sit-ups.. (just make sure that you do these correctly..)

..but the best is the combination of healthy eating and exercise.. I’ve found that either one of these on it’s own doesn’t make enough of a difference, but combined you’ll notice results within a week, even if it’s just in the way you feel!

then, the most difficult part – keep up with your newly formed habit!! make crosses on a calendar for everyday you’ve exercised and eaten correctly.. soon enough you’ll have a pattern going and you’ll feel that you need to stick to making those marks on the calendar.. no cheating!

..hope this helps..
:D

Welcome Bonita,

I will start with just walking for 45 minutes briskly on good weather days. On day where it’s blowing a bitterly cold wind I’ll exercise at home. Ultimately I’d like to be able to get up to five 45 workouts per week.

Good for your Gordie!

I’ve linked to my Fitness Blog. It’s the result of 20 years trial and error. I was a former fitness model so I’ve done just about every crash diet, every insane workout routine, and everything possible to stay fit. More important than learning what to do I’ve learned what not to do. It’s sensible, practical, and I’ve received great feedback from it.

Moderation is #1. In eating. In working out. In resting. That’s what I’ve learned. Gauge a benchmark weight, allowing 5 pounds on each side of it, and write it down on a piece of paper. Put it in your pocket. Don’t let it leave you. It’s your compass.

Check your weight once a week, if you feel the need to. I always liked the clothes test. See how your clothes fit. This indicator can be more reliable than the scale, as your weight will fluctuate due to water retension/release.

Hey Ryan,
I just checked out your Suidoo Lens. Pretty cool. Yes, I’m aware of water weight fluctuations and therefore will probably only weigh myself monthly or fortnightly at most. That way, I should always be seeing some progress.

The clothes test and belt test are very good ways to check progress too.

Cheers.

Gordie,

You talk for more than yourself. So amny of us, myself included are pagued by unfit and unhealthy bodies.

But I like to see that loosing weight as simple maths, science, and Biology.

Simply put we can actually eat as much as we like, if we burn off that extra energy and calories. Our bodies only need a certain amount of calories in the rest position to survive. Problem is, many of us eat about 5 times more calories than we need, and then just lay around. Not burning that energy off.
So what our bodies do is convert that energy for later use, into fat.

So two thing one needs to keep in min.
How much calories am I taking in.
How much calories am I burning off.
Burn more calories than you need an take in, you loose weight
Burn less, and you gain weight.

Calories in, calories out is the basics of weight loss. On top of that it’s important make sure one is getting the right balance of nutrients. Modern diets often cut back too much on fat and protein. I have to make sure, I’m getting enough of all food groups.

Hey, Gordie! I love this post, I really do. I can’t tell you sh*t about eating healthy and exercising, because I don’t do either one. But I will say, you probably aren’t the world’s fattest lifestyle designer. I’m pretty sure Buddha had that title covered.

This reminds me of that line in the movie Anger Management, where the coach (talking about Buddha) says, “How does a man who weighs 600 pounds teach people about self discipline?”

I think I know how: it makes him relatable… human… easy to connect with. When you see an 80 pound yogi, or some super-sculpted specimen of perfection, it’s kinda hard to think, “Yeah… I can do what they are doing.” But a regular person… that we can relate to (ie: Subway’s Jared).

And I’m not just talking about you inspiring others to lose weight. I’m with 8-year-old Max… I don’t think there’s a thing wrong with you. You partied with some friends, gained some weight; as you settle back to your normal routine, you’ll lose it again. No big. Your outward Buddha likeness right now is just a representation of what you are really like inside… perfect. :)

Hi Lisis,
You’re very kind.

I don’t mind people looking a bit overweight. It’s fine with me. The reason I want to lose this weight is because I just feel so weak with all this extra blubber. In the summer of 2005, I climbed Anshan mountain here in China, going up the steep way. Now I’m huffing and puffing taking the stairs for three floors. It’s not a good feeling and at my age I should be in better shape. Also, the weight gain has been rapid and constant – about 8 Kgs a year. I have to put a stop to it now and and fix it before it’s too late.

Health is an asset we should all appreciate. :)

35 Lisis November 17, 2009 at 11:43 pm

I have no doubt you will lose the weight. You are tenacious and determined. Just don’t get down on yourself about where you are, and be patient with yourself during the journey. It took you a while to get to this point, so the trip back may take just as long. Baby steps. Drastic solutions don’t last.

I’m looking forward to your updates on this series. :)

36 Gordie December 11, 2009 at 4:53 am

I agree with you than baby steps is what is needed. Thanks, Lisis.

37 Boris November 18, 2009 at 12:00 pm

Gordie,
I know that I am a relatively new reader of your posts. However, I feel that I have the responsibility of giving you this honest feedback:
1. Your post could have had better taste: Expressions such as: “Got your v.. buckets ready?” and “I am a fat b…” are not required. Maybe you tried to be funny, but I think these expressions are very distasteful.
2. Balance is required: You could have left a single picture of yourself illustrating your current fitness status. If you eliminated four or five pictures from this post, the post wouldn’t have lost anything!
3. You are asking for advice continuously! This is becoming a habit on your posts. It have worked acceptably so far, but readers could get tired of this…
All the best!

Reply

38 Gordie November 18, 2009 at 12:52 pm

Hey Boris,
Appreciate the concern.

1. I express myself the way I choose on my blog.

2. The pictures will stay. Shots from different angles give a better idea of progress once it’s made. However, I think you’re right in that I don’t need a side shot from each side. I deleted one.

3. Asking for advice is fine. That’s how I learn. I don’t intend to do it all the time, but this is a time of change on my blog. Three posts of asking advice is tolerable for most people.

Cheers. :)

I’m swearing off fast food and soda to start. The garbage in North American stores and restaurants isn’t food any more. Then I plan to start cooking again, real food only. I’ve also started riding my bike again, not for exercise (though I do get that) but because it’s fun. I’ve decided I’m not doing any form of exercise because I have to, but doing more active things because I enjoy them and also happen to get exercise.

I’m in my fifties and am starting to put on a bit of weight. I’m 5’10” and I panicked when I hit 85kg’s. I can see the gut developing and so I cut back on the crap. I’m down to 83kg’s but I want to get down to 76. I turned the kids cubby house into a gym and I don’t make the time to use it. Commitment. That’s all I need. That and some extra time :D

Interesting about the dairy. I think I eat too much cheese.

Hey Gordie, dude, I finally found an afternoon to simply sit and catch up on my RSS now that I’m in Thailand and whoa I’ve missed loads! I am so proud of you!

Two things I think may help:
1. I read somewhere that the size of our stomach empty is the size of our fist, whether this is true or not I don’t care, the advice suggested to never eat more than your fist-size in any one meal. In doing this you’ll get that first tingling of feeling full. STOP EATING! Wait 20minutes. If you’re still hungry, eat a quarter the size of your fist. STOP EATING! Have patience with the eating experience by making sure the mouthful is completely gone before shoveling in the next round.
2. How much do you love meat? How much meat do you eat per day? Can you limit the intake to once/ twice a week? I am not advocating you become a vego- even though I am one- but I am suggesting it to be an underlying cause of obesity because it forms poor food choices. I stopped eating meat at the age of 14 because I was a tubby tucker and loved my KFC, when I took meat out of the equation I dropped a lot of weight but in the last 14yrs what I’ve noticed is that I have maintained the same weight with relatively no exercise or dietary control. Being vego automatically means I look for the healthy choice options. If I actually swim (totally agree this is great for you- the weightless is amazing in the water!) regularly I tone up heaps and feel a million bucks. I know this is hard to do with Chinese diets but do try to cook more stirfries at home and when eating out try to go for choices not laden with oil or deep frying.

I was gunna say good luck, but you don’t need it, you have our support!

I do love meat and I don’t like vegetables very much, but I still eat them.

I think you’re right about limiting the size of portions and eating slowly.

I think it’s great that you can feel energetic on a vegan diet. Ultimately, once I get to a maintenance weight stage, I’d like to cut my meat to once a day.

Do you supplement with Vitamin B12?

Hi Gordie, to be clear I am not vegan but a vegetarian who also eats seafood- so really not technically a vego but it’s easier than saying, “I don’t eat any meat except seafood” most restaurants do not take my health choices/ needs seriously if I say that.

A vegan doesn’t eat/ wear any product pertaining to a part of an animal, some extremists don’t even eat honey. And quite frankly I love chocolate way too much to not eat dairy!

I don’t actually need to take supplements because I’ve educated myself in a balanced diet, that said, living in China, and travelling in general, has limited this ability somewhat so to cover my bases I take a multi-vitamin and also spiralina, which I can’t recommend more highly!

Since you love your meat stick with it and introduce leaner ways to cook the foods. Loads of seafood and look for ways to reduce the amount of processing your food receives; less processing equals more nutrients.

Kickass mate. You’ve got the guns pointed in the right direction!

Thanks for clarifying, Caron.

I’ve heard a lot about Spirilina. Found any decent and genuine brands in China? I also take one multi-vitamin tablet per day. I use Centrum.

Not everyone who is over weight got that way from eating. Sometimes medication can play a big part.

Perhaps in your case it was your eating habits.

Anyhow I’m reading this and I’m thinking OMG Gordie why are you so hard on yourself.

Personally I see nothing wrong with you.

Don’t get me wrong- I’m not discouraging you from wanting to loose weight. I think it’s great that you want to.

Hi Rose,
I think the reason I’m hard on myself is because this has come about because of bad habits that I’ve chosen to have. I should have known better. I’m not on any medication, but I noticed that my weight gain started as soon as I left New Zealand. I spent a year in Korea and now seven years in China. It’s possible that my body may not cope with the Asian style of cooking as well as back home. In China everything has MSG in it and is fried. That can’t help.

I have to eat at home more and cook more Western style dishes.

Kudos to you for putting yourself out there, I’m impressed.

I do quite a bit of weight training and find that works best for me. Running on a treadmill just gets really boring, but being able lift for short periods tends to keep my attention and give better physical results. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you’re able to burn from it. Likewise if you’re lifting you can concentrate more on a protein based diet and cut out a lot carbs. How people look is typically 70-80% diet.

If you’re eating a lot of rice try to make sure it’s pure brown rice and not enriched. Any carbs you eat make sure on the labeling it says 100% whole grain.

From that angle I just write in a notebook what I eat in a day so that I claim responsibility for what I’m doing. I’m not a fan of looking at my notebook when it says – “Ate four donuts for breakfast.”

Hopefully that helps a bit – I apologize if I’m preaching to the choir.

I also use bodyspace, which is part of the bodybuilding.com site which allows you to track your goals and find inspiration through others.

Either way, best of luck and I look forward to seeing your progress.

Welcome, Ryan! :)
I think the tip about writing down what you eat into a notebook and then looking back over that notebook would be a great way to track honestly the effort I’ve put into my diet.
I’ll check out bodybuilding.com and see if I can apply something from there to my journey. Cheers!

Hey Gordie! I’ve been working on weight loss this year and one thing that really helped me was addressing emotional eating itself. I found that majority of my eating wasn’t because I was hungry, but to feed an emotion. If you could identify the root of this behavior, you’ll be able to slowly break the pattern. Here’s wishing you all the best in your weight loss goal! :)

Welcome, Celes! :)

I agree that often eating can be an emotional issue for some people. For me if there is an emotional issue it could possibly arise from boredom or perhaps boredom in the past and now it’s just an engrained habit.

To tell you the truth, I think that I just like the taste of yummy food and according to my taste buds most yummy food happens to be bad for me.

Kudos for recognizing this issue. Exercise, diet, health. If you don’t have those, you can’t really do anything in life.
