As we go through life, all too often we find ourselves being torn between what we want to do and what we have to do.
At some point the days begin to run together and a loss of control creeps in. Many people simply compensate by working harder and longer, cramming each day’s activities into an ever shrinking time-frame.
The stresses of daily life can become overwhelming if this condition is not somehow reversed, yet we press onward moving closer to the brink. We fool ourselves into thinking that tomorrow will be better when in fact; the opposite may be the end result.
But why? Can we not see the problem?
We have mismanaged time.
Time has gotten away, and that is exactly the problem. This has become a time management issue.
This type of lifestyle is a direct result of the decisions we make. We’ve all been there, taking on too much to be effective in critical areas.
Somewhere along the way, precious time was traded off for more work. This was not a conscious decision but rather, the result of allowing certain things into our lives that we can do without.
It is quite easy to become consumed by your job or business ventures as you continue to build for the future. When this happens things of great importance get squeezed out.
Those Friday night dates with the wife, the kids’ soccer or football games and family outings can all become victims of this.
You can probably recall when life was so much simpler and you had time to relax and think about your family and loved ones. Times when you came home from work and had the entire evening to do whatever came to mind.
To return to that level of control you must reorganize and free yourself from some of life’s burdens. Work smarter not harder and be willing to let some things go.
Create a personal development plan.
It’s time for a personal development plan that rearranges your priorities and removes the stress and unnecessary pressures you have imposed upon yourself.
You have to get back to controlling life as opposed to life controlling you.
Below is a list of reminders, things that we sometimes need to pause and think about once again. There is no magic potion here, just things we already know, but have perhaps forgotten.
Family and friends.
Get closer to your relatives, starting at home. Make more time for them. Call or visit that cousin and reconnect with an old friend. These can be both heartwarming and invigorating. They also provide that change in routine that is needed to chart a new course.
Clear your commitments.
You may have overloaded yourself with commitments which make you feel as though there is no way out. Be certain to take on no more, and work on clearing away what you already have.
It once took me about six months to clear mine. I had taken on so much work I was overloaded and less than happy that I allowed this to happen. I toughed it out, but learned a “never again” lesson.
Re-examine your tasks.
Many people keep tasks list. Look it over closely to see what you can eliminate, thereby reclaiming some time. You may need to look it over several times, but something has to be taken away.
Slow your pace.
Been rushing around like everyone else? Slow down considerably. It sounds so simple but can be so difficult to do. Another tough decision but one that must be made.
Write down your activities.
Begin a time and motion study by jotting down your activities for a few days. List everything and do as you go along, this helps you slow your pace.
Don’t claim you didn’t have time because this is what we doing, MAKING time.
Learn how to let go, mentally.
When you are out at dinner or visiting a friend or relative, be of the moment. Instead of planning and worrying about time, relax and enjoy yourself. Get away mentally and relax.
Get back to more social activities.
I’m not talking about Facebook here, I’m talking about things like going to see a movie, checking out a dinner club or visiting a museum. Got jokes? Take the family, meet some friends and enjoy a good laugh at the local comedy club.
Reading is fundamental.
That was a slogan from past times. Find a really nice book or magazine and relax, read for a few hours. None of that “Make Money Online” stuff this time, you need to escape for a few hours.
Television news.
Every story is “Breaking News” and it will be breaking for days to come. Take a break yourself and stop watching for awhile. It’s all part of the rat race.
Get some exercise.
Exercise is not just good for the body but also good for the mind. Keep it to something simple that does not require a great deal of time.
Keep your time slots open.
As you take action on some of these reminders, you will gain some free time. Keep those time slots open for the things that matter most in life, like family and friends. Don’t reload with the very types of activities that got us here in the first place.
Travel.
Traveling for pleasure with no firm schedule for a string of days will work wonders. The freedom of being away from the daily routine is one of the most invigorating things I know. Guard your time accordingly and do not commit to a bunch of tourist events. You want down time to do next to nothing, besides relax.
Become a new you.
Identify some things from this list that you can absolutely do and make a change.
Conclusion.
We all know when we have lost control, but somehow we make ourselves think that we are doing the best thing for ourselves and our families by cramming every available hour with work and stress.
This is not as much a flaw as it is the will to succeed and make a better life for ourselves. In doing so, we really work against our goals because we are operating inefficiently.
Much of what is written here sounds so simplistic and easy to accomplish, but we all know better. Regaining control over your life can be difficult, but it boils down to making a lifestyle change.
Will you control life or will life continue to control you?

Hi Jimi and Gordie,
Time to return some comment luv
I noticed a pattern I have that I don’t like. I relax, then pressure builds up until I find I need to relax again otherwise my head will burst.
Pressure peaks are the times I am by far the least productive. Exercise and reading, but also meditating and basic chi kung manoeuvers work great.
But I am far from being a zen master unfortunately. Someday maybe the stress cycle will finally level out

Thanks for your comment, Charles.

Zen masters aside, this is a constant battle for everyone.

Hey Charles,
I’m curious about “chi kung”. I’ll have to do a bit of research on it.
Gordie,

I take this opportunity to thank you for having me as your guest today. Very much appreciated.
May this blog continue to grow and be all that you envision.

Hey Jimi,
I know you like to write about doing online business and blogging, but you may have a hidden gift for personal development. Ever thought about studying it a bit more?
I have given it some thought, just had not pursued it thus far because of my concentration on my main blog, but I haven’t ruled it out.

Loving this post very comprehensive and an excellent place to start when one starts to feel stuck in ye old rut. I agree with Gordie, Jimi you have a great knack for simplifying personal development ideas which you should definitely consider exploring.

Nice one Jimi! I think we’ve all been where you describe and it’s a hard cycle to get out of.
Bizarrely, I’ve found out this year that when I get that “snowed under” feeling, actually going out to do very little except enjoy some fresh air and sunshine puts things into perspective.

Thanks, Mike.
I could not agree more on the get-away-for-awhile approach. It provides that opportunity to recharge and find some energy for what we are doing.

I also find just getting fresh air helps. A long walk is great.
I really like this post Jimi and Gordie. We all take time for granted and it is the one thing we can never catch up on or get back. I have to say that I find that I am less stressed or worried now that I have taken watching the news out of my routine. So much negativity that we do not need in our lives.
Patty Reiser´s last blog ..What Dreams May Come…
Yeah, the news has gotten to be something that I limit quite a bit now. Negativity sells and does wonders for the ratings, which is why the focus seems to be slanted toward that end. World events are what they are, but the delivery systems and styles used today has just gotten a little old with me.
Thanks for your comment, Patty.

I just usually browse news headlines now, so I can know briefly what’s going on in the world without getting all the negative details.
Hmm good food for thought
Thanks for visiting, Lloyd.

Good stuff Jimi. I think the reason alot of people don’t make progress with their personal development efforts is due to lack of planning.

Hi Srinivas,
glad you stopped by.
Lack of planning, as you’ve pointed out, in conjunction with failing to take action are the two main killers of progress.
Thanks for adding to the conversation.

Jimi,
Great job. Now practice what you preach. Christmas is the perfect time to relax and renew for the upcoming new year. Together we WILL create that personal development plan so that we can move forward by planning and controlling our lives.
Welcome, Lee!
I take it you know Jimi. Thanks for supporting him here. All the best with your personal development plan.
Thanks for the welcome Gordie.

Jimi’s my hard working husband. I thought I would razz him a bit about his drive and dedication.

Jimi, you’re busted! Now we have to be careful what you say on here about your wife. Lol!
Mnnn. Good thoughts. For me, it’s a vicious cycle. Stress, relax, stress, relax. Repeat.
At least I know when I need to relax.
I think my biggest struggle is the real-life social time. Need to work on that!

Hey Erica, good to see you.
I hear you on that social time. It can be tough to get in occasionally but it’s a must. I still have “date night” like some teenager. LOL
Does wonders for recharging that energy level.

Great article Jimi,
life balance is so hard for many people, especially people like me who work for themselves and scan books on marketing and internet posts late at night, and early in the morning, always looking for the next marketing tip or idea.
I think it comes down to like you said, on – time and off-time. This can be difficult as the circuits in our brains literally become “rusty” through disuse, so we have to imprint them again, creat new neural pathways by at first forcing ourselves to make a change a little bit at a time.
Once the pathways are created (and no, by the way, I’m not one of those people who think that the brain is all there is to Mind), it becomes much easier, we have programmed ourselves to have a new habit.
This is NLP conditioning at its most productive.

Thanks for visiting, Steve.
Fighting for control of our time can be difficult, particularly under a schedule like you’ve described above. Forcing yourself to find some down time will be a great start toward reclaiming some control.

Hey, great post Jimmi
What you write about affects everyone…its a contatnt battle (listen to my language) Sounds like there is a war inside me!

Thank you once again for taking the time to write it.

A lot of it has to do with time management and letting life go by, but it also has to do with leading life with passion, doing what you love, being engaged in activities that you don´t see time go by…

Yes, I think that’s what Gary Vaynerchuk would say too. When it’s your passion, it doesn’t seem like work.
I really like this post Jimi and Gordie. This post was close to my heart. My Mom spent the last year of her life in a nursing home. She prayed that just one person would call, send a card, write or visit, but no one ever did. No one had time. Friends and family were always too busy.
I honored my mother every day of her life and she left this world knowing that out of the many family and friends she thought she had, I was the one who was there for her.
Please don’t put off taking time out for those you love. If you can’t honor them when they are visiting then what is the point of visiting them when they are dead.

I totally agree. One of the reasons I’m moving back to New Zealand is to be closer to my parents. I have seen them in nearly a decade. They are about to hit their 70′s. I will make an effort to head to their small town to visit them twice a year. They’ll like that.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Rose.
Thanks for your comment, Rose. I too had a similar situation with my Mom many years ago. You are really spot on about visiting when people can appreciate it.
