This will be my last blog post for this year. I’m leaving the blogging world to focus on preparing for my move back to New Zealand.
It suddenly struck me recently that I’m not very employable back in the West. I’ve got nothing that I’m spectacular at or even very competent at that I can wow employers or potential business partners with. I’m going to use the time from now to my move in July to start upskilling myself.
As most of you know, I’ve been in China for the past seven years. In 2005, my Chinese level peaked at a high level, but since then I’ve let it slip as I’ve spent more time online and hanging around with mostly expats here. So, my first focus will be on getting my Chinese back up to and surpass my previous peak level of 2005.
I also want to learn website design so I can have opportunities to do some freelance work. To tell you the truth, I’ve always had a slight fear of the technical side of website design, especially since Internet Explorer can cause problems when all other browsers are fine. Die Internet Explorer! Die!
If I can learn website design, it will be a huge boost to my confidence and should offer me more opportunities.
Why I’m suspending my blogging career.
I asked myself some questions and then answered them:
1. Am I passionate about lifestyle design? Yes!
2. Am I passionate about personal development? Yes!
3. Am I passionate about blogging about lifestyle design and personal development? Not so much anymore.
4. Can I see myself generating a decent income from this blog? Not for a very long time.
5. Are there other things I could be doing that may be a better use of my time? Yes.
Most of you have heard of Pareto’s Law where one should spend most of one’s time on the 20% of things that are bringing or can bring one 80% of benefits. At the moment it looks like blogging won’t be in that top 20% for a long time for me.
Until I get settled back in New Zealand and gain some form of employment or way of generating income, blogging won’t be a priority. However, this blog may continue as I’d had some interest from people interested in buying it. Nothing is confirmed and it may never be sold, but no matter what, this blog will stay online as is until someone else takes it over or I start writing again. Therefore, I recommend you don’t cancel your RSS subscriptions.
Thank you.
Thank you to the other team members who contributed posts to this blog. Your efforts are much appreciated and I’m glad I got to know each of you.
Thank you to all my readers and commenters who came by and joined in on the conversations. You are a great community and I will miss you dearly. I’m sure we’ll meet again in the blogosphere somewhere in the future.
Overall, I’ll be spending a lot less time online, while I’m upskilling myself. However, don’t be surprised if you see me still commenting on other blogs from time to time, albeit much less than I currently am.
Thank you all and take care.
Gordie.
