Lifestyle Design In 2010 And Beyond.

LD in 2010

When people think of lifestyle design, they generally think of those who have broken the traditional 9 to 5 model of earning a living and gone off to do their own thing. They think of the unconventional ways of becoming rich, while traveling the globe.

While this may be true to some degree, it’s by in large not what lifestyle design is all about in this day and age. Lifestyle design is really adopting some strategies that allow you to experience a different career path than the one you may currently be on, the end result being your ideal lifestyle.

It’s an opportunity to shape the way your personal growth will occur, living YOUR lifestyle, which very well may not be sipping Margaritas in the islands.

I have said this before, but everyone experiences lifestyle design, it’s a matter of who controls the design. Working for corporations often means that they control the design and you’re not totally free to do as you wish. This model works well for many, and that’s okay. But all too often this does not lead to the ideal lifestyle for you, but rather something we settle for.

There is this stereotypical perception of lifestyle design that would have you believe that the entire LD industry is somehow completely out of the mainstream of how most of society functions. It’s like it’s totally unconventional, which is simply not true.

One could very easily design a new style of living surrounding their current situation by improving upon the things that are counter-productive to their growth. It can be as simple as becoming smarter about how you spend your money and your time, thereby enhancing your current lifestyle.

While this may not produce your ideal lifestyle immediately, it does begin the process of moving toward possible financial freedom.

For me LD is all about identifying the ultimate goal and developing a plan that leads to that result. It’s working your passion in a deliberate and conscious fashion, achieving your dreams while doing so.

Looking past the general perceptions you will find that your plan is as valuable to you as Tim Ferris’ plan is to him, it’s simply another means to an end.

Last week Gordie made the statement “Lifestyle Design is NOT Dead”
which led to a healthy discussion on this topic. It was clear to see that the LD niche has a need to redefine the perceptions of people so they can see the true meaning of taking charge of one’s life and making it what they want it to be.

It begins with the mindset, then the development of a plan followed by actions that move you closer to the goal.

Now let’s look at a few ways to begin the mindset process.

Face your mistakes head on.

As we look back upon our lives, we can find plenty that we could have done better. Yes, mistakes were made and we could be better off today had we not made them. But we cannot do anything about yesterday other than to refuse to repeat it tomorrow. Acknowledge and move on, the rest of your life is waiting.

Define your ultimate goals.

Describe where you want to go in life and what you dream lifestyle will look like. This should be very detailed and may take some time to formulate. Look beyond the easily obtainable and really lay out a long-term achievement for yourself.

Get some new and successful friends.

Reach out to others who can provide a positive influence on your thinking. There’s not much to be gained by surrounding yourself with the negative vibes of those who will not take action and improve their situations. Find some movers and shakers.

Be a better person.

Identify some of your personal traits that could be improve upon and begin the process of doing just that. This will lead to a different outlook on life, a renewed vigor. Don’t strive for perfection, you will only disappoint yourself but be better in those areas you have identified.

Take action.

No matter what we read, learn or study, nothing will benefit our situations unless some action is taken. Having the greatest collection books and audio recordings on how to change your lifestyle for the better will provide absolutely nothing without your involvement.

Wrap up.

It is important to understand that lifestyle design is not completely about how others have done it, but how you will redesign your current situation to advance toward your dreams.

The successful LD professionals that have blazed the trail before us did it in their own way. You must do the same. Are there certain techniques and commonly known ways to success? Of course, but everyone is different and so is every situation.

Taylor your plan for you and you alone, think far beyond the current year and what has taken place in this niche doing recent times past. Blaze your own trail and find the successful lifestyle that you know you deserve.

Lifestyle design is a way of living, let others think what they want ;)

You have hit this spot on, Oscar. It’s your life so do it your way. Too often we live a life that we THINK others want us to live. That is simply twisted thinking. It’s not about them.

Jimi – nice summry and suggestions. I really believe that you need to set a goal that you believe in, not what the world expects of you. It needs to be challenging, yet achievable to provide motivation. I love the idea that you need to be a better person as part of the LD process and wholeheartedly believe this. What is the point in creating a life you love if no one else can relate and you don’t interact with the world around you. Good stuff!

I surely agree, Phil.
Making yourself a better person on all levels can be one of your greatest rewards. This motivates to do even more.

One thing I have noticed about life though is the fact that when you begin the process of doing really positive things and moving toward success, some of those “friends” of your will fall way. Very telling development there. ;-)

Tim Ferriss is old hat, it’s time for someone new to blaze another trail. Are you stepping up Jimi?

Hey Nathan.
One thing is certain, I’m going to do it my way and I agree, it is definitely time for a new trail blazer. But folks can blaze their own trail by stop subscribing to what everyone else is doing. One-size-fits-all approaches are no longer in vogue. :-)

I like this. Lifestyle Design is not a book, or following someone else’s advice. It’s your plan, your book, your life. Write it!

Lifestyle Design has been called many things over the years… I think lifestyle design should be more accurately described as living a deliberate life. Not changing things for the sake of change, that is like working for the sake of work (to use a Tim Ferrisism).

Some people just are happy standing still. While others, like myself need to learn, grow change at all times. I need to fail on occasion at new things. I don’t feel alive if I am not taking a risk and with that risk, I have the occasional failure. But is that lifestyle design or just a fear or disdain of being board? Am I making a choice to move, if I can’t stand still? Is that really my choice, my design or my version of a rut?

So much emphasis it seems in the lifestyle design community is on living a life that is ever changing. But for some stability, what I would personally observe as stagnation is comfort and thus happiness. These people in my humble opinion are lifestyle designers if they knowingly choose the path they are on. It does not matter if it’s a path I would never choose. Someone has to live in a cubicle and do the work I don’t want to do in a place I don’t want to be. I would prefer to think the people doing that work are happy in it and choose to be there.

Hi Paul,
Point well taken on “living a deliberate life”. That is what lifestyle design is. Your cubicle example is also a good one, many are more than happy to have their own cubicle, catching the subway to and fro for the next 30 years, and that’s fine for those who have deliberately selected that.

Now on the other hand, those living that lifestyle while complaining about it for 10 years should try to make some sort of change, and change only comes with the taking of action.
Good comment, thanks!

I sometimes get the feeling that Lifestyle Design can be a bit “Mememememememememememememememememememememememememememe” and I was pleased to see your comments about being a better person included in there.

That is an important element of making the change for the better, have to start with ourselves before addressing the lifestyle.

Great post Jimi. What is unique about lifestyle design is that everybody has their own story. It’s okay to take what others have learned and implement into our journey, but ultimately it comes down to what we will learn and share with others from our own experiences.
