I read Gordie’s post Lifestyle Design Is Not Dead and his frustration at how some people keep saying to write about things of this nature is a waste of time, because it is dead. Listen guys, people told me in my first week that I would never be able to compete with the big guns in my market place and that I would never ever be able to make an impact. Did I listen? Hell no, and that’s the reason I’m writing a guest post on this fantastic site.
Gordie has put together a great team of extremely talented people here, very clever individuals who all have something different to say about lifestyle design. Have you ever been told that you can’t make it work, or ever been told that is a stupid idea? I have, I still hear it, ‘TheInfoPreneur’, whats that?’. I love it when people say it can’t be done, I love hearing ‘that’s just not realistic’. It maybe not realistic, but I’ll make damn sure I’ll prove you wrong, in a very public way.
Heart.
Are you head strong? Do you sometimes pile in and think, “Okay, now what?” Let me tell you, I do this every single day and have been like this since I was a kid. My attitude to most things is just in the deep end and learn how to swim when I hit the bottom. Yeah, it’s a risky strategy to life, but by god you get the very best out of it. Are you one of these people who deliberates over the tiniest of things? Do you take an age thinking about every eventuality?
We need people who go with their head and make calculated decisions; doctors, politicians need to be calm and collected. In everyday life though do we actually need to spend so much time thinking about everything, get in their and figure it all out when you’re there. I’ve been homeless as a kid, been in the worst kind of situations in the military, but every single time there has been one thing that has saved me, going with my heart.
Fear.
Human beings are scared, sacred of being poor, lonely, and most of all scared of failing. When was the last time you saw a wild mountain lion feeling sorry for itself, or a tiger not chasing an animal across Africa because it thought there maybe a chance of not catching it?
Fear is an emotion, it can be controlled. I use my fear (yes, I do have fear) to my advantage. Fear is my fire, I use the fear others project onto me and turn it into drive and passion. Someone says I’ll never make it, I’m too stupid and I take that fear they are trying to impose on me and turn it into pure fire, pure driving passion to prove them and my stupid emotion called fear wrong.
Positive.
Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying you should be positive and happy all the time. Being human, that’s impossible. Sometimes things catch up to us. Whenever I get low I look around me and compare that to others and the past. Do I have a roof over my head? YES. Am I trying to raise my family in a war zone? NO. Am I dying from a terminal illness? NO. Then get off your ass and stop feeling sorry for yourself.
You need to surround yourself with positive people, look around this site, Gordie and his team and bursting with energy and positivity, so are the people commenting, draw from this and transfer it into your own life, next time someone says, you will never get promoted or afford your own home, take their negativity and mirror it into positivity.
It’s built into some people to want you to fail, they thrive off it. Don’t you dare give them the energy to thrive off you, hold you head high and tell yourself, it can be done.

Great post James. I like your examples in the positive paragraph where you expressed that most of us here have a roof over are heads, are not supporting our families in a war zone, and are not dying from a disease like terminal illness. We have the internet, and we have free resources all over all the place (like your blog). We just need to have the attitude and the mindset. If we have those things and can take action, we can reach any goals that we set for ourselves in the first place.

Great post, James.
I admire your sand, brother. That’s the spirit for getting things done, not in a reckless way, but in a methodical and determine fashion.
I’ve heard all that crap before as well (who hasn’t?) and it only strengthens my resolve. Most of the folks giving the advice (bad as it were) all still standing around making excuses. Why make excuses when you can make something happen?
I learned long ago that I could never do anything about yesterday, but can surely do something about tomorrow.

I think the stubborn approach has some real value. Some people absolutely don’t want us to succeed…at least not more than they do…because it’s uncomfortable for them to be passed. Stubbornness can help us stick to what we knew was right at one time when we’re currently facing self doubt from other’s criticism, even if it’s subtle or unconscious.
James, your writing brings out that stubbornness, passion, and determination. Keep on going.

James, I think it is time you stopped holding back and really let rip!
I can identify with your approach as I was pretty much like that at one time. These days I am more Wu Wei, go with the flow and I find it works for me. That doesn’t mean every now and again I don’t do a little shitkicking but I have learnt to choose my time and place and not be influenced by other people’s agendas.

Careful man, there’s a fine line between being confident and being cocky.
I’m with the “damn the torpedoes” strategy, but it’s also important to constantly assess how things are moving.
Nathan Hangen´s last blog ..Becoming a Crusader
I’ve no doubt that you need to assess and be pro-active and I don’t think I’m being cocky at all, This post was in response to some of the people giving sly remarks behind Gordie’s back which I had heard and saw first hand.
If I followed the strategy of let’s think and mull it over, I wouldn’t have got here today and certainly wouldn’t be guest posting here.
Confidence is neither here nor there to me, I want something I go for it, yeah I make a stack of mistakes but I also get there sometimes too, hard work and rolled up sleeves with a mentality of ‘I’ll decide if it can be done, no-one else’
TheInfoPreneur´s last blog ..Who Wants A Guest Post Pt2?
Mistakes are part of the game. Nothing to be afraid of there.
I’m just saying that when you paint things in black and white…me vs them…it can come off wrong.
As for being cocky…I’m referring to the bio more than anything.
Nathan Hangen´s last blog ..Becoming a Crusader
Ah Ok got you, Gordie wrote the Bio for me, I had no input in that I always leave that to the site owner.
Totally get your point though, I think it’s a robust response to the people saying his niche and others are dead.
I have constantly been told plainly ‘black and white’ if you like as others who have been reading this, that I will never make it and that my market place is too difficult for someone like me.
I stand here in front of everyone who has been told that in the past and say let’s go for it, screw ‘em

Fear is a number one killer of dreams.
I tend to approach fear in the same way you have mentioned – Flip it around and use it as my motivation.

Good for you! I love being surrounded by controlled risk takers who harness and use their fear for positive ends. I think of my style as being a creative facilitator and try to surround myself with others who bring complementary skills. It is great to realize that we can learn and benefit from others. Thanks for a great post.

I have said it before and I will again, You are quite the inspiration James. Getting rid of excuses and jsut doing it has helped me so much. I have finally let go of my past BS and have just been going for it. somewhere recently I read about the 70% solution, where you can be successful by going for it with most of the plan instead of waiting for the whole plan to develop and be too late. I was always too late. Not anymore. I am just not listening to the naysayers anymore. Thanks James and thanks Gordie, this site is great.

Let fear be what drives you to be a better you in all areas of life you possibly can be. Be as positive as possible whenever you can and don’t let people get you down just because they don’t see what you’re doing as realistic or something that’s just not going to work.
Few people do support my blogging but do I let that slow me down or stop me? No. And why? Because it’s what I want to do, I see others succeeding at it and because I shouldn’t just do what everyone else thinks I should. I listen but it doesn’t always mean I do, as far as others are concerned.
What do you think?

Very good! I find that fear of failure can do more than almost anything else. Once you tell the world, “I am doing this and MOVE OUT OF MY WAY!” then it seems your afraid of not completing that mission. You gather up enough heart, enough courage and enough guts to do what you want.
I currently have no other job than student and parent. But i work everyday trying to build a brand and a product. Testing and creation is hard to do, but I still do it because I KNOW that I want a different life than everyone else.
Thanks for the post!
